No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
