Defense Department Report Finds Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A highly anticipated Pentagon report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute contained particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public in the coming days.
